About the Project

Duluth artist Susanna Gaunt is partaking in a yearlong project where she gathers both inspiration and content from the community.

At the Aquarium

Each month, Susanna will be on site at Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth, Minnesota, to engage with visitors and discover the different ways they experience wonder at the museum. She will set up a table with information on the project, samples of her work and a survey for Aquarium-goers to fill out.

The Survey

The main goal with the survey is to gather stories from the community about their engagements with natural history, whether on site at the Aquarium or out in nature. Different questions will be posed each month so folks can participate multiple times.

The Artwork

From the surveys she collects, Susanna will choose one response per month to create a pair of paper sculptures. One of the pair will incorporate the text or drawing that is submitted and the other will be a visual interpretation of the response.

The Exhibit

At the end of the year, in Summer of 2023, the completed artworks will be on display at the Great Lakes Aquarium Merrill Lynch Fine Arts Gallery. Additional related pieces will be included as well.

The Archives

Though Susanna will only use one response per month for the artwork, all of the stories will be archived on this website.
