Winter Wonder

Ice shards on Lake Superior

I have noticed at my recent visits to the Aquarium that the majority of families that stop at my table are from Duluth, or close by. It makes sense - people tend to be a little more targeted with their travel in winter, leaving it to the locals to explore the museum on weekends when they need to get out of the house. I also notice, though, that Duluthians aren’t ones for staying indoors. Based on their responses to my questions about snow, and ice and the lake in winter, it is clear that the locals get out and make the most of winter.

As one visitor commented, the winter is here, regardless, so if we don’t embrace the outdoors during these months, then we just have less love for the winter time. I couldn’t agree more. There’s so much beauty when the snow blankets the town and offers up clues to who else is out and about. Folks described (and drew) many different animal tracks, from deer to bunnies, bird wings to their pet dog. And they wove images of stillness and clarity in the cold air, of the magic transitions and sounds of the lake as it freezes and thaws.

I’ll take winter in Duluth any day.
